What is the Porsche In-Car App Store?
Soon, Porsche enthusiasts everywhere will enjoy the convenience of their smartphones from the driver’s seat. Volkswagen Group recently announced that they would launch a Porsche in-car app store for their various brands later this year. This move reflects a growing trend in the industry for new technology, namely infotainment systems. Read on to learn more about the upcoming Porsche in-car app store:
An Emerging Trend in the Automotive Industry
In recent years, many car owners have cited infotainment systems as the main reason they purchase a new vehicle. In fact, there will be an estimated 40 million connected vehicles by 2030. These systems incorporate a smartphone-like experience into the car dashboard, featuring notable third-party apps like TikTok, Spotify, and Yelp.
Volkswagen Group had certainly noticed because Cariad, their in-house software development company, announced its own app store at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain, earlier this month. Starting in July 2023, VW Group will add this feature to their new Audi models, including the A4, A5, Q5, A6, A7, A8, Q8 E-Tron, and E-Tron GT models. A Porsche in-car app store is soon to follow, though the exact date of its release is currently unknown.
“It’s a new level of digital experiences we want to show,” Dirk Hilgenberg, CEO of Cariad, explained to reporters. “We can combine and leverage with each other, creating an immersive experience, especially as far as gaming, relaxing is concerned.”
New In-Car App Store Features
The Volkswagen Group has been interested in new software for quite a while, but integrating these systems has challenged this conglomerate. Just last year, the VW Group faced severe delays due to buggy software that set back the launch of new Porsches and Audis, causing the CEO at the time to lose his job. However, despite this setback, the VW Group feels confident about launching many new features as part of this significant upgrade.
Current setups like Apple CarPlay and Android Auto make it difficult for users to enjoy the traditional driving experience. The new system, One. Infotainment seeks to solve this problem by building on its predecessors’ work while still providing modern amenities. The apps on the in-car store come in a wide range of categories, such as weather, music, gaming, news, and more. Harman, a Samsung subsidiary, assisted in developing the app store.
With strict security measures, drivers will not need to worry about apps overwriting the automobile software. In addition, users will only be able to use apps like TikTok for consuming content, not filming or uploading videos for the time being.
